The Charlotte Chapter Servant Leaders and Coordinators met on March 7, 2021 for their Lenten retreat via Zoom. This was part of their Lenten spiritual renewal and preparedness for Easter. Attendance and participation was robust and the group explored the topic on, “ The Three Colors of the Cross”.
Fr.John Bartutek, LC, S.Th.D. guided the participants as they reflected and meditated on the three colors of the cross namely, brown, red, and the skin (flesh and bone) of Christ. The first, the brown earth-color of the wood, represents the humble sacrifice of Jesus and why he chose to be crucified. The second, the red color of Christ’s blood that was poured out on the cross, staining the wood of the cross, reveals to us for all time the real motivation behind Jesus’ redeeming self-sacrifice: Love. In the deep red color of Christ’s love we find the secret to carrying our crosses. The third, the skin (flesh and bone) color of Christ’s humanity, gives us the secret to carrying our crosses faithfully and fruitfully. Jesus, hanging on the cross, was fully human. For this reason, we know that he understands everything we go through; we never have to suffer alone.
The Cross was absolutely central to Christ’s life and mission. And so, it must be absolutely central to the life and mission of us Christians. Why did God make the Cross so central to his Son’s life? Why did God make the Cross so central to our lives? And how can we carry our crosses as courageously and fruitfully as Jesus carried his? These were the questions that retreat participants reflected and meditated on, and prayed about.
